Regular listeners to the Chris Moyles show on BBC Radio 1 may well know about Birthday Corner, a regular feature on the show where listeners send in birthday cards and the team read them out. Sometimes they are cute and lovely, sometimes they are boring, sometimes they’re overly ‘wacky’ because the sender has tried too hard and sometimes they are soundly mocked for some reason.
I am a fan of the Chris Moyles show and had bugged the Feisty Kim for a few months to send in a card for me for Birthday Corner. Each time the Feisty One responded with a derogatory and somewhat dismissive snort, accompanied by words something along the lines of “No I bloody haven’t, quit your whining.” Fair enough, I thought I’d leave it there.
So imagine my surprise, shock and general bemusement when, on the morning of November 23rd 2007, a card from the Feisty Kim to my very self was read out on Birthday Corner.
Surprise because I hadn’t expected a thing, shock because it was a card for me being announced on the radio and bemusement because my birthday is actually on December 4th, not November 23rd. Still, a shriek of annoyance from the Feisty Kim downstairs was enough to confirm that the card from Kim to Penge celebrating a 27th birthday was indeed for me and not, in some completely ridiculous twist of chance, someone else.
It might well be breaking many copyright laws, broadcasting laws and other laws that govern such things, but I have a recording of my brief spell in the National limelight in the Em Pee Three format, so you can share in the glory of the event. To enjoy it fully I recommend listening to it early in the morning when you’re approximately 78% awake, this will lead to an enhanced listening experience. Click here to listen again to my 74 seconds of ‘fame’. Also note the card that the Feisty Kim sent in; not only is related to something I enjoy but it also she had the forethought to pick a deliberately different card to ensure that it was mentioned on air, instead of being placed into the Birthday Bin.
In the unlikely event of any BBC folk finding this recording and taking offence to it, please let me know and I’ll remove the offending file immediately. There is no need for any lawsuits, lawyerbots, courts and legal wranglings. I am your humble servant.
Oh bravo indeed could i have your autograph please as your not only a star of the interwebs but now also of that wireless radio thingymagiger!
Also bravo to Feisty Kim for including the word ‘random’, which is half of a plug as well. Yaywoo.
Half of a plug! Maybe I’ll go for a cheeky plug on there next…
